I was almost turned off by the cover. It looked kind of like a little kid's comic book to me. Then when I saw it was a fantasy M/M romance. Yeah...99.99999% of that genre of book is the worst written smut and yet, I couldn't help myself. The premise and the tile really piqued my interest so I dived in expecting to hit the bottom of this puddle. Instead I found a well thought out, unique story with extremely developed characters. My oh my, there was character growth, chemistry and action too. I was NOT expecting that at all. This book isn't just good, it was AMAZING.I am very impressed by the author. I love apocalyptic reads, M/M romance and fantasy, combing those three together was extremely bold but she pulled it off. Wyn, wow so unexpected! She made a terrifying, evil looking monster sweet and insecure. Danny, he is compassionate and naive in a really scary world. They made sense as a couple and they didn't just immediately get down and dirty like most M/M romances. They actually had to build report and chemistry. Once they did get steamy, oh baby. How the author handled that with some monster like anatomy was very dirty in the best possible way.I have only good things to say about this book. I am excited to read number two with Edin. He is a very different character, but if I know this author, he will be unexpectedly deep and complicated. Great job! I am a complete sucker for a good monster story and this one exceeded everything I was hoping for. Danny and Wyn are incredibly complex characters, that you can't help falling for and rooting for their HEA. The world building is exceptionally detailed - a United States that has been ravaged by the appearance of "monsters" - forcing humans into either crowded coastal cities, where supplies are limited, or into bands of Raiders, that traverse the wasteland that are the rest of the states. Wyn, The Soul Eater, is one of the most feared of the creatures that roam - appearing every three years to exterminate humans and then disappear until the next cycle. No one knows why. Danny is a young man, grieving from the loss of his mother to cancer, who signs up for the military in the hopes that his prospects will improve. Sent out with a legion of other soldiers as literal fodder for the Soul Eater during a military strike, Danny comes face to face with the creature and survives. In fact, he's the only survivor. What happens afterwards is an amazing tale of a young, innocent man that learns that not all monsters wear hideous faces and claws, and an immortal "monster" that finds the other half of his soul. I can't rave enough about how good this book is. It is an erotic monster story mixed with a post cataclysmic event story of survival and revelations. I was completely addicted from the beginning and I can't wait for the next book, which will pick up the story with one of the "monsters" that Danny and Wyn meet. 10* stars and I 100% recommend this book!
