The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary. But when Rowley’s star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend’s newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion. Someday I really will learn my lesson about purchasing books *just* because they have a huge number of reviews. (And I might have known that after I read the trash "13 reasons Why" or "If I Stay.")Yep. Sssllloooww learner here.As a parent, I would say that:1. There are no positive themes in this book. Not one.In fact, I would have to say it that this main character is the single most dislikeable child that I've ever met in a book for adolescents.2. A lot of the humor is probably a little bit more appropriate for adults than it is for kids, and that is expected to happen in the case where an adult tries to write in the mind/voice of a child.3. The book has one example of sexual innuendo. (I was not interested to read back through it again to find the exact page.)4. In fact: what may have been the only good message contained in the book is an example of what type of human being NOT to be, based on every single action of this *extremely dislikeable* anti-hero.From the perspective of kids:When my kids like a book, they will usually know right away. And even if they cannot produce the vocabulary themselves, they will want me to sit down and spend time with them to read to them--provided it's something they like.My Enthusiastic Reader Son was not interested in this, and the illustrations were not enough to be a big draw. (Compare this to the wonderful illustrations in "American Born Chinese." They drew him in right away, even though the vocabulary words were for kids ~three grades higher than he currently is.)Verdict: Save your time and money. It only takes about an hour to read all the way through, but even that little bit is time that you can never get back. Bought for a gift but after reading some I decided it had a negative influence.
