I’ve just finished this book, and my overall impression after getting through it, is...wait, that’s it? I was expecting one of the best lesbian romcoms I’ve read in a long while given the effusive praise lavished on this book. But the reality didn’t live up to the hype (for me). I never really felt a strong connection between Elle and Darcy. Their relationship seemed very surface, built more on lust and the starry-eyed “I love the IDEA of you” kinds of feelings that are intoxicating in the beginning, but don’t often run very deep in the end.I also feel like there were some missed opportunities for character development, particularly with Darcy. For one, she is supposedly resistant to the idea of falling in love with Elle due to having been cheated on in the past by the woman she had intended to marry. And yet there’s actually very little time spent in her head, witnessing how deep the scars run. No flashbacks to the moment she found out about the infidelity, and almost no instances where she reflects on what she’d had with her fiancée (and consequently what she lost). It was one of those things that was talked about (barely) but never really shown. Her brother seemed more hung up on it than she did. And yet, it was apparently the big thing holding her back from loving again almost till the very end of the book. I don’t know. I just didn’t buy it.The story also ends EXTREMELY abruptly, as if the author decided to just be done with it, which was jarring to say the least.There are some cute moments. The text conversations are pretty funny and witty. The constant odes to geekiness and the joys of fandom made me eagerly nod along in nerdy solidarity. There are sexy times if you like that kind of thing, even if those scenes fell extremely flat to me.Despite its flaws, the majority of readers seem to have loved this book, so I’d encourage anyone who likes a simple, no-frills romcom to go for it and decide for themselves. A first date between two young, gorgeous (of course) women does not go well but they discover a common need. The need seems to be the plot hook of 70% of romances of the past 30 years. They need a fake relationship with someone, anyone so that friends and family will stop bugging them, stop trying to fix them up etc. A slight variation of this hook is where one of the two needs a date for an upcoming event, usually a wedding, but occasionally a high school reunion.....but not really this time. Ok, so that's the basic story; kinda like those 2 hour romances on TV every night. Now add lots of graphic sex. Graphic, but incredibly not sexy sex. And what do you have? Nothing more, just a rather overdone plot that gets boring rather quickly. Of course there's some history to be shared by each of the lovers, a break-up with only a few pages to go, and then, and then. Sorry, no spoilers here. Incredibly, "Written" got some very kind words in the Washington Post's year end best books list. So, what do I know?
